Buying signals are events that suggest an account may be ready to buy. They tell you about timing, not certainty. A company with a strong signal is worth a call this week; a company with none is worth a note in your CRM and nothing more.
The reason they matter is prioritization. Every rep has more accounts than time. Buying signals are how you decide which accounts get the time now.
The signals that actually predict timing
Not all signals are equal. In rough order of strength:
- Hiring for a relevant role. If a company is hiring for the function your product serves, budget was approved and a problem is being staffed. This is the strongest single signal.
- New funding. Fresh capital means new budget and pressure to spend it on growth. Time-box your outreach to the weeks right after the announcement.
- A new executive in the relevant function. New leaders re-evaluate tools and vendors in their first 90 days. That window is real.
- Technology adoption or migration. A company moving onto or off of a platform is actively rethinking its stack.
- Expansion. New office, new market, new product line. All of it creates new needs.
Red flags are signals too
The mirror image matters as much. Layoffs, budget freezes, cost-cutting language in earnings or posts, and churned leadership are all reasons to deprioritize. Reading a red flag early saves you from a multi-week pursuit of an account that was never going to spend.
How to read them fast
You can do this manually: check the company’s recent posts, scan its job listings, look at leadership tenure. It works, and it takes ten to twenty minutes per account, which is why most reps skip it.
The faster path is to let a tool read the page for you. LinkedIntel scores signals as IMMEDIATE, MODERATE, or COLD directly on the LinkedIn company page, so you get the prioritization call in about ten seconds instead of twenty minutes. IMMEDIATE means act now; COLD means move on.
Put it to work
Pick your top 20 open accounts and check the signal on each before you write a single email. Spend your outreach time on the IMMEDIATE ones. Install LinkedIntel and try it on the next company you open. For the bigger picture of how signals fit into qualification, read what sales intelligence is.
